Request for Comments Pre-Release Edition (2026)
For many years, students, inquirers and clergy have asked me the same question: where is the Orthodox counterpart to the Catechism of the Catholic Church? This catechism is my answer, now offered to the Churches for review.
It builds on the Longer Catechism of St Philaret of Moscow, the most widely endorsed doctrinal summary in the modern Orthodox Church. The church-approved structure of Faith, Hope and Love is kept, the language is renewed, and the content is greatly expanded to address the questions of our own time.
In the ancient sense of the word, this is a catechism as St Cyril of Jerusalem understood it: a preparation for Holy Initiation into the life and Mysteries of the Church, and a companion for lifelong growth within them, “from glory to glory.” My aim has been a carefully worded text that reflects the consensus of the Orthodox Churches.
